Dogs are the best man’s friend offering them companionship, protection and some help man do some little work at home and workplaces. The American Kennel club at the end of the year 2011 announced its nationwide registration statics revealing the most popular dog breeds in the United States with Labrador being the top most popular breed in America seconded by German Shepherd. These two popular dog breads have maintained their ranking for the past two years.

of these popular dog breeds. Among the factors the American Kennel club were; activeness, friendly, honesty and temperament plus many more as we shall see when discussing each individual breed in details. Below is a concise description of the AKC most popular dog breeds.

Labrador-Retriever is the most popular dog breed for 21 consecutive years. This is attributed to its good traits and temperament. This AKC top most popular bread is active, friendly, gentile, and trustworthy and all in all it’s adorable. Our neighbor had one Labrador-Retriever called “Bruce” and he was truly adorable. There has been no reports about the injuries which have been caused by this AKC most popular breed because it’s calm, gentle and friendly thus good and suitable for families with kids. If you love dogs as your pet or for companionship, better get for yourself a Labrador-Retriever.

German Shepherd

Here comes in the second position the German Sheperd which is the leading police, guard and military dog in the world. This breed has been ranked second among the most popular dog breed according to AKC statistics for the past 2 years. German Sheperd has good temperament, and is friendly if well socialized. However this AKC second popular breed is active and strong and requires daily mental and physical exercises so that they are stable. I wouldn’t recommend owning this bread if you can’t give it daily mental and physical exercises coz it will become unstable and you will curse why you got it to your family.

Wow, this is my favorite dog bread, I have ever own one which was obedient and enjoyed my companionship. According to American Kennel Club Dog Registration Statistics, Beagle has been in the fourth and fifth rank for over the past years till 2011 when it knocked out Yorkshire Terriers form the third position. This bread has an even temper and a gentle disposition, obedient and they enjoy company with humans and other dogs. If you the person who enjoys giving and receiving companionship to and from animals, Beagle will be the best for you coz it does it all.

Golden Retrievers

The Golden Retriever is a remarkable dog breed which has a good temper showing traits of kindness, friendly and confident. It ranked fourth in 2011 and second in 2001 according to American Kennel Club Dog Registration Statistics. This breed needs to be taken for a daily long walk or a jog and if possible a run will be the best for its physical and mental exercise. It’s strong and active (energetic) hence the need for daily mental and physical exercise.

 Yorkshire Terriers

In 2006, Yorkshire Terriers was ranked second, third in 2010 and fifth in 2011; this bread has been knocked out of the third position by Beagle which expressed calmness and friendly ness to both other dogs and animals, and to humans. However, Yorkshire Terriers is an active dog breed, and it’s actually overprotective hence the need to put this into consideration when handling it.

The American Kennel Club Dog Registration Statistics show that Bulldog has ranked among the top 10 most popular dog breeds just of recent in 2010 and 2011 where it was ranked 6 (sixth). This fat dog breed is generally docile, tractable and they do not require alto of daily exercise compared to other breeds. However, Bulldog is heavy and due to its heavy weight, it is not well preferred by many families as a pet. It requires 2-3 little boys of 14 years to lift a mature Bulldog.

For over the past three years, Boxer has maintained its AKC most popular dog breed rank in the seventh position. Boxer has a quite good temper being friendly, harmless and faithful to his master. However, he is brave and intelligent making him suspicious to strangers. Many families use him as a guard dog as well as a companionship. Boxer is cute and has no folds (wrinkles) in the face making him easy to clean as compared to other breads like Pug and Chinese Shar Pei of similar traits and temperament.

Poodle is exceptionally smart, active, and obedient with keen sense for instinctive behavior.  However this breed is classified as energetic (need a lot of daily physical exercise) and thus it should be well trained and socialized. Quite frankly, I have never loved this breed in my life, I don’t know why but in my heart I just don’t like it.

Shih Tzu

Shih-Tzu ranked the ninth according to the American Kennel Club Dog Registration Statistics. It is quite a lively dog and loyal to its master. It’s alert and small in size making it portable when carrying during a flight, in a taxi or when at home.

Rottweiler is a remarkable dog breed that is good-natured, very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work. In 2011 it ranked eleventh after Dachshunds in the tenth position. I would consider Rottweiler my second option after Labrador-Retriever because they have the same traits only that Rottweiler sometimes isn’t trustworthy. The breed is very powerful, courageous and devoted to their masters with protective traits towards their family hence it should be given exercise at least daily to avoid boredom.
