Most Endangered Animals- Endangered species; An endangered species is an inhabitant(s) of organisms which are at risk of becoming extinct because they are either few in numbers, or vulnerable by changing environmental conditions. Law enforcement policies have been implemented by many nations such as forbidding hunting in the practice to try and conserve the endangered species.
There are many factors which have made the species to be endangered with the leading ones being climatic changes
and Human practices as we will see detailed for each species. In this article, we will discuss in brief the 10 most endangered species in the world, explaining the factors leading to their extinction.
The tiger (Scientific Name: Panthera tigris) is the largest cat species, reaching a total body length of up to 3.3 and weighing up to 306 kg. Currently, statistics show less than 2,500 tigers across the globe yet initially at the beginning of this century there were about 100,000 wild tigers. Factors which might have caused the extinction of tigers include, Population Fragmentation, Poaching, and Habitat loss hence making the endangered.
Polar bear is the first animal species to be endangered due to global warming. They spend most of their lives on the frozen Arctic sea ice hence being classified as marine mammals. An adult female weigh around 175-390 kg and an adult male weighs around 350–680 kg. The world wildlife along with other animal and environmental protection and conservation organizations are trying all possible ways to find out the possible means/ ways to deter the extinction of the polar bear.
Among which include; Funding field research to find out how climatic change affects the long-term chance of survival for polar bears, Protecting critical habitat for polar bears, Preventing harmful human practices like poaching, illegal trade, and unsustainable tourism that directly affect polar bears.
Mountain gorillas are strong, powerful with long muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet. Research shows that there are less than 780 mountain gorillas left worldwide (on planet earth). They live on the green, volcanic slopes of Uganda, DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Rwanda. Africans have led to the extinction of these mountain gorillas through their harmful practices like poaching, making it an endangered species in the world.
The Amur leopard is considered and classified as critically Endangered by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 1996. Amur leopard is found in Russian Far East and northern china and its habitant is mainly temperate forests. The Amur leopards’ (Panthera pardus orientalis) population is reported to be fewer than 50 individuals. In 2007, 15-20 adults were counted making it critically the most endangered species in the world.
Javan Rhinoceros (Sunda Rhinoceros) the large horned mammal with thick armor-like skin is one of the greatest endangered species (animal) found in South and Southeast Asia, East, West, South and Central Africa. They are highly threatened by human (poaching) due to the high demand for their horns because it is very strong and good for decorations. An estimate of around 60 Javan Rhinoceros are left in the world.
Pacific Walrus (Scientific Name: Odobenus rosmarus) are located in the Arctic Ocean and sub-Arctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere and can weigh more than 1,700 kilograms when mature. In February 2011, the federal Fish and Wildlife Service reported that “Pacific walrus are endangered by climate change, which is melting its icy Arctic home, and merits protection under the Endangered Species Act”. Due to the fact that walrus’s tusk are made out of ivory, humans have taken a step to poach pacific walruses using their meat as food and the skin for making boats.
Magellanic penguins are not endangered but rather classified as “Near Threatened” according to IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature) reports. Penguins live along the coasts of Southern Chile and Argentina. In the 1980’s, Over 40,000 penguins in Argentina died due to pollution. Many factors have been noted to be threatening the extinction of penguins which includes oil spills (pollution), climate changes (fish are displaced by the heating sea forcing the Penguins to swim further to look for food), commercial fishing among others.
Greater Bamboo Lemur
Greater Bamboo Lemur (Scientific Name: Prolemur simus) the population of critically endangered bamboo lemur discovered in Western, Northern and Central Madagascar Weighs about 2.4 kg and others about 25-45 greater bamboo lemurs where found in the Torotorofotsy wetland.
Giant Panda (Scientific Name: Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is located in the southwest chine and central-western to the east of the Tibetan plateau. According to a 2004 research, panda was considered as an endangered species when its population was less than 1,595 in the wild. A 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country making panda an endangered species( animal).
Leatherback Sea Turtle
The leatherback sea turtle are sea animals born on land but spend their entire life in the oceans. The female leather back sea turtle returns to the land to lay eggs after which goes back to the sea. An adult leatherback sea turtle weighs up to 840kg and can grow up to 2 metres long. Over 100,000 leatherback sea turtle where estimated in the 1980s’, in 1986, there were only 6,500 recorded on one of the nesting beach in Mexico. In the early 1990s’ research indicate that there were less than 100 were recorded in 1993. Please let us take part in protecting these endangered species because their rate of extinction is high.
